Ludisia discolor (Ker Gawl.)

An orchid you grow for its leaves, not its flowers — and one that breaks nearly every rule about what orchids are supposed to need.

An Unusual Orchid, Named for the Wrong Reason

Ludisia discolor got its first description in 1818 from a plant growing in a European stove-house rather than a wild-collected specimen — not unusual for the journal that published it, which specialized in colour plates of plants already in cultivation. Blume later moved it into its own genus, Ludisia, in 1859. It's a plant that has long been sold for its velvet, near-black leaves and copper-red veining rather than for anything happening at bloom time.

A Forest-Floor Plant, Not a Tree-Dweller

Unlike most orchids people grow — epiphytes clinging to tree bark — this one lives on the ground, creeping through damp, shaded leaf litter in evergreen broad-leaved forest valleys across a wide swath of southern China and Southeast Asia, roughly 900–1,300 m per Flora of China. That terrestrial, forest-floor habit explains almost everything about how it wants to be grown: moist, humid, shaded, and never baked by direct sun.

Light: The Orchid That Wants Less of It

Give it low to medium indirect light, not the bright conditions most orchids crave. Too much sun scorches and washes out the dark, velvety leaf colour that's the entire point of growing the plant. This tolerance for shade is exactly why it does well as an indoor foliage plant and a terrarium subject, thriving in corners too dim for almost anything else people try to grow.

Temperature: No Winter Performance Required

Keep it warm all year, roughly 15–28°C, with no deliberate cool-down or dormancy period. That's a real departure from many terrestrial orchids from temperate climates, which need a winter rest to flower or even survive — and it's probably the single most common misunderstanding newer growers bring to this plant.

Media and Water: Moist, Airy, Never Standing

A moisture-retentive but still airy mix works best — sphagnum, fine bark, perlite and charcoal in combination, or a ready-made terrestrial orchid blend. Keep it evenly moist; this isn't a plant that wants to dry out between waterings the way many epiphytic orchids do. What it really can't tolerate is water sitting at the base of the stem — that's the direct path to crown rot, and by most accounts the leading cause of death in cultivation, well ahead of underwatering.

Feeding and Flowering

Light, dilute feeding through active growth is all it needs. Wild populations typically flower February–April per Flora of China, though timing is more variable in cultivation and often overlooked entirely — the blooms are small, short-lived and white, with a twisted lip and column, pleasant but genuinely secondary to the foliage display.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

Look closely at an open flower and the bright yellow spot that catches the eye isn't the lip — it's the anther cap at the tip of the column; the lip itself is white. It's a small detail, but one that trips up a lot of casual descriptions of the flower.

Crossed With Its Relatives

Growers also cross it with the closely related jewel-orchid genus Anoectochilus; the intergeneric result sold here as 'Red Velvet' is one example, pairing L. discolor var. nigrescens with Anoectochilus siamensis. Wild pollination biology, by contrast, is thin on documentation — what exists comes mostly from cultivated plants rather than confirmed field observation.

Why It's Worth Growing

It asks for less light and less fuss than almost any other orchid, propagates readily from a simple stem cutting, and rewards a dim windowsill or terrarium with foliage colour most houseplants can't match. For anyone put off by orchids that demand bright light and a fussy watering schedule, this is the counter-example.

🌎 Plant Data
Scientific Name
Ludisia discolor (Ker Gawl.) Blume (1859); basionym Goodyera discolor Ker Gawl. (1818), described from a cultivated plant rather than a wild-collected flowering specimen.
Common Names
Jewel Orchid, for its velvety dark leaves with coppery-red veins; the Chinese common name is 血葉蘭 (xuè yè lán, "blood-leaf orchid").
Taxonomy
The genus Ludisia currently holds 2 accepted species — this one and the Philippine L. ravanii, described in 2013; before that the genus was treated as monotypic. Trade names such as "var. alba", "nigrescens" and "Super Veination" are not accepted botanical varieties — they're horticultural selections; POWO lists no accepted infraspecific taxa for this species.
Native Range
Southern China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, S.–SE. Yunnan), Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and the Philippines.
Habitat
Damp valley-floor leaf litter in evergreen broad-leaved forest (per Flora of China).
Elevation
Roughly 900–1,300 m (per Flora of China).
Growth Habit
Terrestrial, creeping rhizomatous stems; an evergreen foliage orchid with no true leafless rest period.
Mature Size
Trailing to semi-upright stems to 15–30+ cm; grown mainly for the foliage rather than the flowers.
Bloom Season & Scent
Wild populations typically flower February–April (per Flora of China); timing is more variable in cultivation. Flowers are small, short-lived and white, with a twisted lip and column, not especially showy. Some references (e.g. Singapore's National Parks Board) describe it as fragrant; grower reports vary, so this guide doesn't call it either way.
💧 Care Data
Difficulty
Low — one of the easier orchids to keep, and a common entry point into "foliage" orchids, but intolerant of a soggy, stagnant base.
Light
Low to medium, no direct sun — unusually shade-tolerant for an orchid. Too much light scorches and bleaches the velvety leaves; it does well under indoor indirect light or grow lights, which is part of why it's popular for dim corners and terrariums.
Temperature
Warm year-round, roughly 15–28°C. No deliberate winter cool-down is needed — unlike many temperate terrestrial orchids, and probably the single most misunderstood point about this plant. Damage can occur below about 10°C.

Source: climate normals for Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng Province, Vietnam (Địa chí Đà Lạt plus Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology records), adjusted from Đà Lạt's actual elevation of ~1,500 m down to ~1,000 m — within this species' 900–1,300 m elevation range per Flora of China — at the standard lapse rate of 0.6°C per 100 m. Not an on-site measurement; for cross-reference only.
Humidity
On the higher side, ideally 60–80%+; typical indoor humidity plus occasional misting is usually enough.
Media
Moisture-retentive but still airy and free-draining — a mix of sphagnum moss, fine bark, perlite and charcoal is common, or a ready-made terrestrial-orchid blend.
Watering
Keep evenly moist and never let the mix dry out completely, but avoid letting water stand at the base of the stem — by most accounts, overwatering and crown rot, not drought, is the most common way to lose this plant.
Fertilizing
Light, dilute orchid fertilizer applied regularly through active growth; no need for a strong formula.
Propagation
Easy by stem cuttings — unusually easy among orchids. A healthy cutting rooted in moist media, or a division, generally takes without much fuss.
💡 Did You Know
Described from a greenhouse plant, not a wild specimen:
The 1818 description of this species was based on a plant grown under glass rather than a wild-collected flowering specimen — the journal that published it specialized in colour plates of exotic plants cultivated in British gardens, so that wasn't unusual for its time. Blume moved it into the newly created genus Ludisia in 1859. Trade names like "alba", "nigrescens" and "Super Veination" are horticultural selections or marketing names, not formal botanical varieties — POWO lists no accepted infraspecific taxa for this species. The genus itself only gained a second accepted species in 2013, the Philippine L. ravanii; before that it was treated as monotypic.
Small flowers, a surprisingly bright yellow cap:
In cultivation, this species is sometimes crossed with the closely related jewel-orchid genus Anoectochilus; our own 'Red Velvet' is exactly such a cross, between L. discolor var. nigrescens and Anoectochilus siamensis. Wild pollination has not been rigorously documented in the field — what's on record comes mostly from observations of cultivated plants, not confirmed wild pollinator visits. A common mix-up: that bright yellow spot is often assumed to be the lip, but the lip is white — the yellow belongs to the anther cap at the tip of the column.
The fastest way to kill it is to love it too much:
Unlike most epiphytic orchids, which fear drying out, this species' most commonly reported cause of death, by most growers' accounts, is the opposite: overwatering, with standing water at the base of the stem rotting the crown. On fragrance, some references (including Singapore's National Parks Board) describe it as scented, but grower reports vary enough that this guide doesn't call it either way.
Sources: POWO (Kew), IPNI, Flora of China, GBIF occurrence records, Wikipedia (Ludisia genus article), official Đà Lạt climate normals (Địa chí Đà Lạt). Cultivar/selection names (alba, nigrescens, Super Veination, etc.) are horticultural, not taxonomic; points where fragrance or wild pollination lack consistent sourcing are flagged rather than resolved.
