Resources and Caresheets

Resources and Caresheets

Growing guides written for the plants we import. English and 繁體中文.

Every caresheet is written around the conditions a plant actually needs in a Canadian home, greenhouse or garden — where it grows in the wild, how much light and water it wants, what to pot it in, and what it does through the year. They are free to read, and we add to them as new species arrive.

⚠️ These guides are a starting point, not a formula. Light, temperature, humidity, air movement and water quality differ from one home, greenhouse and region to the next. Please read them as reference and adjust to your own conditions — following any caresheet unchanged, ours included, rarely works.

Caresheets

Paphiopedilum

Paphiopedilum malipoense

麻栗坡兜蘭

A southwest-China and northern-Vietnam limestone species not formally named until 1984, with one of the longest-lived flowers ever measured in the genus. Covers a corrected subgenus identity, a debunked dawn-opening myth, and why growing on limestone doesn't mean its pot needs lime.

Phalaenopsis

Phalaenopsis bellina

貝利娜蝴蝶蘭 · 美麗娜

A strongly citrus-scented Bornean species split from P. violacea in 1995, now the parent of dozens of fragrant hybrid lines. Covers why it blooms without a cool-season trigger, the color-form names that are real versus trade nicknames, and why a green flower spike should never be cut.

Dendrophylax

Dendrophylax lindenii

幽靈蘭 · 鬼蘭

A leafless Florida and Cuban epiphyte that photosynthesizes entirely through its roots, made famous by The Orchid Thief and its film adaptation. Covers its long-disputed pollinator, three decades of poaching, and a mounting and feeding routine that runs opposite to intuition.

Cypripedium

Cypripedium plectrochilum

離萼杓蘭

A southwest-China slipper orchid whose closest relative is not its showier local neighbors but a species on the other side of the Pacific. Covers its native range across five provinces, a near-neutral native soil pH, and the thin, honestly-flagged state of its cultivation data.

Ludisia

Ludisia discolor

血葉蘭

A shade-loving terrestrial jewel orchid grown for its velvety, silver-veined foliage rather than its flowers. Covers its forest-floor native range from southern China to Southeast Asia, low-light and humidity needs, and why it suits growers just starting with terrestrial orchids.

Paphiopedilum

Paphiopedilum rothschildianum

國王兜蘭

A Mount Kinabalu endemic once thought extinct for decades after its origin was misdirected to New Guinea — believed to protect the collection site from rivals. Covers its unusual tolerance for bright light, the serpentine rock chemistry behind it, and its CITES Appendix I status.

Phalaenopsis

Phalaenopsis schilleriana

西雷利蝴蝶蘭

A Philippine limestone-cliff species known for its silver-mottled leaves and airy sprays of soft pink flowers. Covers its native limestone habitat, light and watering through the year, and how its true-species care differs from the many hybrids bred from it.

Paphiopedilum

Paphiopedilum emersonii

白花兜蘭

A critically endangered Chinese slipper orchid from the Guangxi/Guizhou karst, originally described from a cultivated plant rather than a wild specimen. Covers its calcium-leaning culture, a cool-season bloom, and why its subgenus placement differs between two competing classification systems.

Habenaria

Habenaria linguella

小舌玉鳳花

A South China terrestrial tuber with almost no documented cultivation history outside its native range. Covers its drought-triggered dormancy, a confidence-graded distribution map, and how to tell it apart from a very similar species published on the same page in 1835.

Phragmipedium

Phragmipedium kovachii

科瓦奇兜蘭

A giant-flowered Peruvian slipper orchid discovered in 2002 and now CITES Appendix I. Covers its cool, lime-rich cliffside habitat, why it differs from the store's other Phragmipedium hybrids, and the 2002 discovery and trafficking case that followed.

Habenaria

Habenaria lindleyana

寬葉玉鳳花

A Thailand-centred terrestrial tuber whose dormancy is triggered by drought, not cold. Covers watering through growth, the drought-driven rest period, and a naming mix-up with an unrelated Indian species.

Habenaria

Pecteilis radiata

白鷺蘭

The store's first temperate species — a summer-blooming, winter-deciduous terrestrial from Japan, Korea and the Russian Far East. Covers its cool-but-frost-free winter rest and the naming dispute between Pecteilis and Habenaria.

Cynorkis

Cynorkis fastigiata

馬達加斯加地生蘭

A self-pollinating terrestrial tuber native across five Western Indian Ocean islands, not just Madagascar. Covers its warm, frost-free dormancy and why the tuber should be potted up promptly on arrival.

Habenaria

Habenaria medusa

美杜莎玉鳳蘭

An Indonesian island endemic named for its gorgon-like fringed lip. Covers its warm, dry-triggered dormancy, light needs, and how to tell it apart from a commonly confused mainland relative.

Habenaria

Habenaria carnea

肉色玉鳳蘭

A limestone-endemic terrestrial from Thailand and Malaysia, grown in cultivation since the 1890s yet barely recorded in the wild. Covers watering through growth and bloom, and the dry dormancy that follows.

Habenaria

Habenaria rhodocheila

玉鳳蘭

A tuberous terrestrial with a striking coloured lip. Covers the growth and dormancy cycle, watering through each phase, and how to handle the tubers over winter.

Cypripedium

Cypripedium californicum

加州杓蘭

A hardy North American lady's slipper of wet, open seeps. Covers moisture, drainage, light and the cold period it needs each year.

Cypripedium

Cypripedium kentuckiense

肯塔基杓蘭

One of the largest-flowered North American slipper orchids. Covers siting, soil mix, summer moisture and winter dormancy in the garden.

Cypripedium

Cypripedium formosanum

台灣喜普鞋蘭

The pleated-leaf slipper orchid from the mountains of Taiwan, and one of the easier Cypripedium to start with. Covers potting, summer care and overwintering.

Paphiopedilum

Paphiopedilum delenatii

德氏拖鞋蘭 · 越南美人

Full guide and background: native habitat and altitude, light, temperature and humidity, potting mix, watering, feeding and rest period.

Oncidium

Oncidium

新手養護指南 — 文心蘭

A beginner's guide to one of the most forgiving orchids to start with. Light, watering, potting and what to expect through the year.

⚠️ Caresheets describe how a species grows once it is established. The plants we ship are bare-root and not established — they arrive without growing medium or pot, and need to regrow roots and settle before normal care applies. See What Bare-Root Plants Look Like on Arrival, and our Terms and Explanations for what is covered on arrival.
