- 有一個登錄雜交種,但本店賣的是原生種:查詢 RHS 登錄資料,剛好找到一個以本種為親本的登錄雜交品系——Habenaria Kat's Whiskers,2017年由育種者 Leon Glicenstein 登錄,是 H. lindleyana × H. medusa 的後代。本店這株不是那個雜交種:商品描述清楚寫著「Type: Species」,商品標題上的「[2.4 BS]」指的是塊莖尺寸等級(2.4吋、Blooming Size 開花級),不是育種代號。市面上另有一個玉鳳蘭屬雜交種 Habenaria Regnieri,是 rhodocheila × carnea 的後代,跟本種沒有關係,是完全不同的一次雜交。
- 「斷水」建議是溫室講的,不是給暖氣房聽的:很多地生蘭的休眠期照顧建議都寫「完全斷水」,這其實是濕度70%以上的溫室環境才適用的做法。北美暖氣房冬天濕度常常只有25到35%,同樣「斷水」的做法搬到這種環境下,塊莖很容易在悶不吭聲中乾枯萎縮,跟悶爛一樣都是常見死因,只是死法相反。休眠期中途挖出來看一眼,是判斷該補水還是該繼續乾放最直接的方法。

Two botanists, one epithet, two different orchids
Start with the name, because getting it wrong is the easiest mistake to make with this species. In 1835, the British botanist John Lindley published Habenaria latifolia for an Asian plant — without realising that Kunth had already used that exact epithet in 1816 for an unrelated South American orchid. Lindley's name was therefore illegitimate the moment it was published. In 1840, the German botanist Steudel fixed the problem the way taxonomists do: he coined a replacement name, Habenaria lindleyana, honouring Lindley for the plant Lindley had described. That's the name this care sheet is written for, and the correct citation is Habenaria lindleyana Steud. — not "Rchb.f.," an authority that doesn't actually attach to this name anywhere in the literature.
Then, in 1844, a completely different botanist — Wight — published his own "Habenaria lindleyana," unaware Steudel had already used it four years earlier. Wight's plant was Indian, from Travancore in Kerala, and his name was itself ruled an illegitimate later homonym. It's now treated as a synonym of Habenaria digitata Lindl., a Himalayan and Indian species with stem-borne (not ground-hugging) leaves, documented fragrance, and a winter bloom season — the opposite of nearly everything true of the plant in this pot. Their ranges even overlap in Laos and Cambodia, so this isn't a purely historical curiosity: if you find a source describing "Habenaria lindleyana" as fragrant, winter-flowering, or native to India, it is almost certainly talking about the wrong species. The product listing for the tuber sold here correctly states "Fragrant: No" and doesn't carry any of the winter-blooming Indian material.
Not a rainforest orchid — a survivor of fire and disturbance
Herbarium labels for this species are unusually consistent, and what they say cuts against the assumption that a tropical Asian terrestrial orchid must come from deep, undisturbed rainforest. Collector after collector, decade after decade, wrote some version of "shaded" or "partly shaded," describing deciduous teak, bamboo and dipterocarp-oak forest that is repeatedly noted as fire-damaged, degraded, and secondary. The single confirmed Chinese population, in Guangxi, grows on a karst limestone slope under roughly 65% canopy cover with dense shrub and herb layers beneath. One Cambodian record breaks the pattern — an open, degraded hillside — so the species clearly tolerates more exposed ground on occasion, but the weight of the evidence points to shade on the floor of a forest that has, more often than not, already burned once.
This matters for two reasons. First, it settles the light question: this is a shade grower, not a sun-lover, and the AOS's genus-wide Habenaria light figures (published for the genus's brighter, more sun-tolerant sections) shouldn't be applied uncritically here — the genus as a whole spans everything from shade-loving to sun-loving species, but this particular one sits at the shaded end. Second, it's a useful piece of reassurance: a plant repeatedly found thriving in disturbed, fire-prone secondary forest is not a fussy climax-forest specialist that needs a perfectly recreated micro-habitat. It's a survivor.
A flower that lies down before it stands up
The single easiest way to identify this species, even without a flower, is its leaves: 3 to 6 of them, pressed flat against the ground in a rosette, broadly ovate to almost circular. Most other Habenaria species hold their leaves up along an erect stem. This one lies down. When it flowers, a naked scape rises from the centre of that rosette to 30–40cm, carrying anywhere from 6 to 25 white flowers (8–12 is typical in cultivation) that open in succession rather than all at once, which stretches a single spike's display out over a longer window.
The flower itself is unfussy by this genus's standards — no lacy, deeply fringed side-lobes like the ones seen on some other Habenaria species. The lip's mid-lobe does most of the visual work; the two side-lobes are small, narrow points, more accent than ornament. What is dramatic is the spur: a slender 30–35mm thread trailing behind each flower, roughly two to three times the length of the lateral sepals. There are no recorded colour forms — every documented population is pure white, unlike, say, the multiple colour forms documented in H. rhodocheila.
Warm through winter, not cold
This is the single most consequential piece of advice in this care sheet, because it's the opposite of what a grower might assume from other terrestrial orchids. Several Cypripedium species genuinely need weeks of near-freezing vernalization to flower. This species needs nothing of the kind.
The evidence is the plant's own climate. Even at the coldest, northernmost population ever documented for this species — the single site in Guangxi, China, at the very edge of its range — January averages an 18°C day and an 11°C night, and rarely drops below about 6°C. Every other population, from lowland Thailand to southern Vietnam, is warmer still. A heated Canadian living room in winter, sitting comfortably at 15–24°C, is already within the natural dormancy envelope this species experiences in the wild. There is no dormancy vernalization requirement documented anywhere in the literature for this species — keep the dormant tuber at ordinary indoor room temperature, and resist the instinct to "give it a cold winter" the way you might for a Cypripedium. A garage or an unheated basement is not doing this plant any favours.
Dry, not bone-dry
If temperature is the trap unique to growers who already grow Cypripedium, watering is the trap that catches almost everyone, regardless of what else they grow. A great deal of published dormancy advice for terrestrial orchids says to withhold water entirely. That advice was, more often than not, written for or by a grower running a greenhouse at 70%+ relative humidity — an environment where a bone-dry pot still leaves the tuber sitting in reasonably humid air. A heated North American home in winter, often down at 25–35% RH, is a different environment entirely, and the same "withhold water" instruction can quietly desiccate a tuber to death over a few months.
The workable middle ground: once the leaves have yellowed and dormancy has set in, aim for the medium being dry to the touch but never bone dry. In practice that means picking one of two routines and sticking to it — either a light mist across the surface of the medium once a week, or a single thorough watering every 2–3 weeks that's then allowed to dry out completely before the next one. Don't combine the two. Partway through dormancy, it's worth digging the tuber up for a quick look: plump and firm means you're getting it right; shriveled and soft means it's drying out too much; soft, mushy or foul-smelling means the opposite problem — rot. Resume regular watering only once a new shoot is clearly visible, usually in April or May; watering "because it's probably spring by now" before that shoot appears is one of the more common ways to lose the plant at the last hurdle.
Bright shade, not full sun
No lux measurement has ever been published specifically for this species, so the figure on this care sheet — roughly 10,000–20,000 lux, or 50–70% shade cloth — is a synthesis built from qualitative descriptions ("partial shade," "dappled shade or morning sun only") and cross-checked against the quantified canopy cover at the one site where it's actually been measured (around 65%). It's worth being explicit that this sits well below the brighter end of the light range published for the genus Habenaria as a whole, which includes species from open, sun-exposed habitats entirely unlike this one. Treat this species as closer to a Phalaenopsis in its light requirements than to a Cattleya.
No pollinator study, and a scent that isn't there
Nobody has published a pollination study for this species. Given the 30–35mm spur, a moth pollinator — likely a hawkmoth, judging by spur length in related species — is a reasonable guess, but it remains exactly that: a guess, not a finding. The fragrance question is more settled, if less dramatic: the one nursery culture note that specifically addresses scent reports none, and no botanical source describes one either. It would be tempting to assume a long-spurred white flower must be night-scented for its moth pollinator, but a 2025 study of two related, sympatric Chinese Habenaria species found the opposite pattern — the longer-spurred, hawkmoth-pollinated species was the one with no detectable scent to the human nose, while its shorter-spurred, settling-moth-pollinated relative was the fragrant one. Spur length, in other words, predicts nothing reliable about scent in this genus.
Why grow a plant this obscure
This isn't a showy orchid, and it isn't a household name even among orchid growers — a search for it online turns up thin, scattered material: a couple of grower blog posts, one nursery culture sheet, a handful of academic papers written for entirely different purposes. Part of the appeal is exactly that obscurity: a ground-hugging rosette of round leaves, a tall spike of white flowers opening one after another over weeks, and a dormancy routine that, once understood correctly, asks for very little — room temperature, a light hand with water, and patience through a few dry months. It rewards a grower willing to read past the first search result and get the two easily confused points — the right authority name, and a genuinely warm dormancy — settled before the tuber goes in the pot.

不是雨林蘭,是火燒次生林的常客
這個種的標本紀錄講的話出奇一致,而且剛好打破了「熱帶亞洲地生蘭一定長在原始雨林深處」這個刻板印象。一個又一個採集者、一個年代接著一個年代,標籤上寫的都是「遮蔭」或「半遮蔭」,棲地是柚木、竹林、龍腦香櫟混合的落葉林,而且反覆被形容成火燒過、退化的次生林。中國廣西那個唯一確認的族群,長在一片石灰岩坡地上,樹冠覆蓋率大約65%,底下灌木草本層都相當密。柬埔寨有一筆紀錄打破了這個規律——是在比較開闊、退化的次生林拍到的,說明牠偶爾也能忍受比較開闊的環境,但整體證據還是偏向遮蔭。
這件事有兩層意義。第一,光照的答案已經很清楚了:牠是遮蔭植物,不是喜光植物。玉鳳花屬公布的光照數字大多偏亮,是給那些比較喜光的種看的,這個屬涵蓋的物種從喜歡開闊棲地的種到需要強光的種都有,不能把整個屬的數據直接套在這一種身上。第二,這反而是個令人放心的訊息:一株在受干擾、火燒過的次生林裡反覆被找到的植物,不是那種需要完美複製原始林微氣候才能養活的嬌貴物種,牠是個生存者。
一株先趴著長、才站起來開花的植物
不開花的時候,認出這個種最快的方法是看葉子:3到6枚,平貼地面呈蓮座狀,卵形到近圓形。許多玉鳳花的葉子大多沿著直立莖往上長,這一種卻是趴著長的。開花的時候,一根裸露的花莖從蓮座中心直直冒出來,長到30到40公分,掛著6到25朵白花(栽培下常見8到12朵),依序一朵接一朵開,讓單一花莖的觀賞期拉得比較長。
以這個屬的標準來看,花朵本身算是樸素的——沒有部分玉鳳花那種深裂成蕾絲狀的側裂片。唇瓣中裂片撐起了大部分的視覺重量,兩側的裂片又小又窄,比較像點綴。真正戲劇性的是那根距:細長30到35毫米,拖在花朵後面,大概是側萼片長度的兩到三倍。目前沒有任何花色變異的紀錄——所有查到的族群都是純白色,跟花色多變的 H. rhodocheila 不一樣。
冬天要溫暖,不要低溫
這是整篇文章裡最關鍵的一條建議,因為它剛好跟一般人從其他地生蘭得到的印象相反。杓蘭屬裡有幾種確實需要好幾週接近冰點的低溫春化才能開花,這一種完全不需要。
證據就是牠原生地本身的氣候。就算是這個種紀錄過最冷、最北的一個族群——中國廣西那個唯一族群,位在分布範圍最邊緣——1月平均都還有日溫18°C、夜溫11°C,很少低於6°C。其他族群,從泰國低地到越南南部,全都比這裡更暖。加拿大暖氣房冬天室溫舒服地落在15到24°C之間,本來就已經在這個種野外經歷的休眠氣候範圍裡了。文獻裡完全查不到任何要求本種休眠期需要春化的紀錄——休眠期的塊莖放在一般室內溫度就好,不要出於「跟杓蘭一樣要給牠一個冷冬」的直覺,把牠搬去車庫或沒有暖氣的地下室,這樣做對這株植物一點好處都沒有。
休眠要乾,但不是曬乾
如果說溫度是養過杓蘭的人特別容易踩到的坑,那澆水就是不管養過什麼植物、幾乎人人都會踩到的坑。很多地生蘭的休眠期照顧建議都寫「完全斷水」,但這類建議多半是寫給、或寫自濕度70%以上的溫室環境——在那種環境下,就算盆土乾透,塊莖周圍的空氣本身還是相當濕潤。加拿大暖氣房冬天濕度常常只有25到35%,完全是另一回事,同樣一句「斷水」搬過去,幾個月下來塊莖可能就這樣悄悄乾枯萎縮死掉。
比較可行的做法是抓一個中間值:葉子轉黃、正式進入休眠之後,讓介質保持「摸起來乾,但不是曬到全乾」的狀態。實際做法是從兩種方式裡挑一種、然後固定用同一種——每週在介質表面噴一次霧,或是每2到3週澆透一次、中間讓它完全乾透,不要兩種一起做。休眠期中途最好把塊莖挖出來看一眼:飽滿結實就代表做對了,皺縮偏軟代表太乾,軟爛發臭就代表悶爛了,方向剛好相反。要等新芽明顯冒出來(通常在4到5月)才恢復正常澆水,「大概是春天了吧」就提早澆水,是這株植物在最後關頭陣亡的常見原因之一。
要遮蔭,不要曝曬
目前沒有任何針對這個種發表過的實測光照數值,這篇文章給的數字——大約10,000到20,000 lux,或50到70%遮光網——是綜合幾個定性描述(「半遮蔭」「僅晨光或漫射光」)、再對照唯一一個有實測數據的棲地(樹冠覆蓋率約65%)湊出來的估計值。值得說清楚的是,這個範圍明顯低於玉鳳花屬整體公布的光照區間上限——這個屬涵蓋的物種從喜歡開闊棲地的種到需要強光的種都有,跟這一種完全不一樣。養護時把牠當成比較接近蝴蝶蘭的耐蔭程度,而不是嘉德麗雅蘭那種喜光植物。
沒有傳粉研究,也幾乎聞不到香
目前沒有人針對這個種發表過傳粉研究。看那根30到35毫米的距,猜是蛾類傳粉、甚至天蛾,是合理的推測——但也僅止於推測,不是已經證實的結論。花香的問題反而比較有答案,雖然答案沒那麼戲劇性:查得到的苗商栽培紀錄裡,有回報過的都寫無香,植物學文獻裡也沒有任何一筆提到氣味。很容易直覺認為「距這麼長的白花,晚上一定要靠氣味吸引蛾類」,但2025年一篇研究兩種近緣中國玉鳳花的論文剛好發現相反的情形——距比較長、由天蛾傳粉的那一種反而是人類聞不出味道的那一種,距比較短、由較小型蛾類傳粉的近親反而有香氣。換句話說,在這個屬裡,距的長短完全預測不了有沒有香氣。
為什麼值得養這麼一株冷門的蘭花
這不是一株搶眼的蘭花,就算在蘭花愛好者圈子裡也稱不上知名——上網查資料能找到的東西相當零散:幾篇栽培者的部落格文章、一份苗商的栽培說明、幾篇寫作目的完全不同的學術論文。這份冷門本身反而是牠的魅力之一:一叢貼地的圓葉蓮座,一根高挑的花莖上開著一朵接一朵、要開好幾週的白花,休眠的照顧方式一旦搞懂了其實要求不多——室溫、澆水的手放輕一點、再加上幾個月的耐心。這株植物比較適合願意多花點心思查資料、先把兩個最容易搞錯的地方(正確的命名人、真正溫暖的休眠溫度)弄清楚,再把塊莖種下去的養護者。

A terrestrial tuberous orchid of the subtribe Orchidinae, with its heaviest concentration of records in Thailand and confirmed but thinner occurrences in Laos, Cambodia, southern Vietnam and one isolated site in Guangxi, China. Deciduous — it grows and flowers through the wet season, then dies back to a tuber for a dry-season rest. Its most recognisable feature is a rosette of leaves pressed flat to the ground. - One epithet, used twice: when Lindley published this species in 1835, he didn't realise he'd reused an epithet Kunth had already used in 1816, making his name illegitimate. In 1840, Steudel coined a replacement name honouring Lindley — that's where "lindleyana" comes from. Then in 1844, a different botanist, Wight, attached the exact same name to a completely different orchid from India — that combination was also later ruled illegitimate, and is now folded into the Himalayan/Indian species Habenaria digitata as a synonym. This means anything you find online under "Habenaria lindleyana" might actually describe two different plants: the real one here (no scent documented, blooms Aug–Nov, leaves in a flat ground rosette) versus the misapplied Indian one (fragrant, winter-blooming, upright stem leaves). If a source says this species is fragrant, blooms in winter, or is native to India, it's almost certainly the wrong plant.
- One registered hybrid exists — but this listing is the pure species: RHS registration records show exactly one hybrid grex with this species as a parent — Habenaria Kat's Whiskers, registered in 2017 by breeder Leon Glicenstein, a cross of H. lindleyana × H. medusa. This product is not that hybrid: the listing states "Type: Species," and the "[2.4 BS]" in the title refers to tuber size grade (2.4 inches, Blooming Size), not a breeding notation. Separately, one registered Habenaria hybrid on the market, Habenaria Regnieri (a cross of rhodocheila × carnea), has no lindleyana in its parentage — a different cross entirely.
- "Bone dry" is greenhouse advice, not living-room advice: a lot of dormancy guidance for terrestrial orchids says to withhold water completely — but that only really works in a greenhouse running 70%+ humidity. In a heated North American home at 25–35% RH, the same advice can quietly shrivel a tuber to death, which is just as real a failure mode as rot from overwatering, only the opposite direction. Digging the tuber up for a mid-dormancy check is the most direct way to tell which way you're erring.
