Almost everything written about hardy lady's slippers assumes you garden somewhere cool. This one grew up in Arkansas, where July afternoons hit 32°C and the air is thick enough to chew. It still wants a proper winter — but it will forgive you a southern summer, and almost nothing else in the genus will.

A fishing trip, and thirty years of argument

In April 1951 an amateur botanist from Ohio named Jim Daulton was fishing in Kentucky when he noticed lady's slippers he did not recognise. The pouches were far too big, and the wrong colour — ivory rather than the bright yellow he knew. He dug two, took them home, and grew them for the better part of three decades while trying to persuade professional botanists that they were looking at something new.

It took until 1977 for anyone to make the trip. Victor Soukup of the University of Cincinnati visited the Kentucky populations, agreed with him, and published the plant as Cypripedium daultonii — named for the man who had spent twenty-six years insisting it existed. The name did not survive. Accounts differ on exactly why: one says the required Latin description was missing, while Kew's records annotate it as an illegitimate later homonym. Either way, it was struck down on procedure rather than on botany.

In 1981 Clyde F. Reed published the plant properly, in Phytologia, as Cypripedium kentuckiense. That is the name Kew accepts today. The last doubts were cleared in 1998, when Case and colleagues ran isozyme comparisons and confirmed it really is a distinct species rather than an unusually large form of the Large Yellow Lady's Slipper. Hobby literature sometimes retells this as a story of fraud; nothing in the traceable record supports that. It was a priority dispute, and Daulton was right all along.

The more interesting question is how a metre-tall orchid with the biggest flower on the continent stayed unnamed until 1981. The answer is that it hides in exactly the places botanists rarely walk: mucky seeps at the foot of wooded slopes, and sandy ravine bottoms in floodplain forest. It flowers for a few weeks in late spring, in small scattered colonies, and for a century everyone who did see it filed it mentally under "unusually big pubescens" and moved on.

What sea level does to a lady's slipper

Here is the number that reorganises everything else: 0–400 metres. That is the elevation range Flora of North America gives, and it is the only published figure there is. Compare it with the Asian species most growers meet first — C. tibeticum, C. macranthos, C. formosanum — which live between 1,500 and 3,500 metres and rely on altitude to stay cool. This one has no altitude to hide behind. The Virginia population is essentially at sea level.

So how does a lady's slipper survive an Arkansas summer? By choosing its microhabitat with great care. The two habitats that recur in every survey are alluvial terraces in mature floodplain forest, and springhead seeps where water emerges from fractured rock at the base of a slope. Both are shaded by a closed hardwood canopy; both have water moving through the root zone all year. The US National Vegetation Classification has a named community for it — red maple, blackgum, sweetgum and beech over royal fern, with Sphagnum "usually present." Air temperature at Mena, Arkansas may read 32°C in July, but on a shaded seep under that canopy the roots are sitting somewhere far more comfortable.

That single observation is the whole care sheet in miniature. Give it shade and a root zone that never dries and never stagnates, and the air temperature stops being the problem it looks like on paper.

Heat it can take, cold it must have

Among commonly grown Cypripedium, the rough heat ranking runs: formosanum > kentuckienseparviflorum var. pubescens > parviflorum var. parviflorum > calceolus > reginae. Plant Delights, in North Carolina, calls it among the easiest lady's slippers for the southeastern United States; Hillside Nursery says it is the most tolerant of high summer soil temperatures in the genus. There is a limit, and it has been measured: a Louisiana propagation trial recorded glasshouse peaks of 45°C, which killed seedlings outright or forced them into premature dormancy. The same plants recovered once moved outside into partial shade.

The other half of the equation is the one people get wrong. "Southern species" does not mean "no winter needed." It still requires two to three months below about 5°C to break bud, and a plant denied that chill will sit underground and do nothing, year after year, until the rhizome exhausts itself. Bringing a dormant Cypripedium indoors "to protect it" is the single most reliable way to kill one. Growers report 8–12 weeks under 4–5°C as the working floor — genuinely less than C. reginae demands, but not zero.

Published hardiness ratings disagree more than you would expect for such a well-known plant. Plant Delights says zones 3a–8b; Missouri Botanical Garden says 3–7, with zone 8 workable only if you add shade; the RHS rates it merely H5, hardy to about −15°C; European nurseries advertise it as good to −30°C. Read across all of them and the practical message is that cold is not what limits this plant. Below roughly −25°C it wants reliable snow cover or a deep mulch, and that is the whole of the caveat.

Shade, and how much of it

Every source agrees on the shape of the answer and almost none of them quantify it. Travaldo gives the one usable number: 70% shade cloth is satisfactory. Frosch says semi-shade with no direct midday sun, or the north side of a building. Missouri Botanical Garden allows one to two hours of morning or evening sun, but only in cool-summer climates. White Flower Farm puts it plainly — more shade in the south than in the north.

No measured lux figure has ever been published for this species. Converting from the shade percentage puts it somewhere around 12,000–20,000 lux, and that is an estimate rather than a measurement; treat it as a starting point, not a specification. The practical test is easier than the arithmetic anyway: if the leaves scorch at the margins by midsummer, it wants more shade. If the plant grows tall and floppy and refuses to flower, it wants less.

The mix, and the lime that isn't

Build it more than half mineral. Pumice or perlite for structure, coarse grit or lava rock for drainage, a modest fraction of fine bark or coir as the organic component, all sitting on a coarse drainage layer several centimetres deep. Frosch's own instruction for garden soil is to open the top 10 cm with crushed lava or clay pebbles; Phytesia specifies at least 50% mineral outright. Compost and rich garden loam are out — both hold too much water and too much salt.

Then there is the pH question, which deserves its own paragraph because getting it wrong is expensive. Received wisdom says lady's slippers want lime, and for C. reginae, C. calceolus and C. candidum that is entirely correct — an annual dressing of crushed oyster shell is standard practice. It is not correct here. The US Forest Service, NatureServe and Go Orchids all describe this species from acid sandy seeps, and the Sphagnum growing beside it in the wild is about as clear a pH indicator as nature provides. Against that, the Virginia population sits on base-rich seepage margins, Louisiana's official fact sheet says "acidic to calcareous," and German nurseries recommend a lime-bearing mix. Plant Delights lands on 6.0–6.5; White Flower Farm says 6.5–7.0 and explicitly "not acidic."

Our reading of the weight of evidence is pH 6.0–6.5: slightly acid to near neutral, with no lime added and no deliberate acidification either. If your tap water is hard, a kanuma fraction will pull the mix gently back down. But do not lose sleep over it — drainage and shade decide whether this plant lives, and pH decides very little by comparison.

Water: the seep, not the swamp

This is the one place where kentuckiense asks for something most Cypripedium advice warns against. It grows on ground that seeps all year. Missouri Botanical Garden describes it as thriving in moist boggy areas; German growers report it wants to be "very moist, never dry." Keep the medium evenly damp right through the growing season and do not let it dry out, even briefly, in its first year.

The distinction that keeps the plant alive is between moving water and standing water. A seep is saturated and oxygenated at the same time, because water is passing through it continuously. A pot with a blocked drainage hole is saturated and anaerobic, and that combination rots rhizomes within weeks. This is precisely why the mineral fraction and the drainage layer are non-negotiable: they are what make constant moisture safe rather than fatal. Through dormancy, cut back to barely moist — and in wet-winter climates such as coastal British Columbia, a ventilated rain cover over the dormant crown is worth more than any amount of careful watering.

Feeding: the restraint is the technique

Sources differ on the details and agree on the direction. Special Vegetation recommends a quarter teaspoon of Dyna-Gro per two gallons, every other watering, May to August, and adds the useful summary "less is more." White Flower Farm suggests a balanced feed at quarter strength. Travaldo says half strength every ten days. Plant Delights refuses salt-based fertilizer altogether and uses an organic blend. Frosch is the outlier, arguing for slow-release granules at the same rate as any other perennial — not less.

One data point cuts through the disagreement: in the Louisiana out-planting trial, fertilizer applied at planting time was recorded as actively detrimental. So plant into an unfertilized mix, wait until the shoot is up and growing, then feed lightly. Stop by August so the rhizome and next year's bud can mature. If you are ever unsure whether to feed, the correct answer for this genus is no.

Getting it to flower

Plant in autumn, on arrival, so the rhizome gets a full winter's chill in its new position. Spread the roots horizontally within the top 10 cm — roots planted vertically, as though you were potting a bulb, is the mistake nurseries name most often. The rhizome sits 2–3 cm below the surface with the resting bud pointing up, the bud tip roughly a centimetre under.

Then wait. A blooming-size rhizome is expected to flower the following spring, but transplant stress often makes a plant skip a season, and that is not a sign of failure. From seed the journey is 5–10 years. Once established, clumps build slowly and flower more freely each year; divide at dormancy, in autumn or early spring, and replant immediately.

If an established plant grows well but will not bloom, work through the list in this order: did it get a real winter, below 5°C for two to three months? Is it in too much shade? Has it been fed too generously, which builds leaf at the expense of bud? Those three account for most cases. Deer, slugs and the occasional caterpillar account for most of the rest — a single caterpillar can take out a season's flower bud overnight.

The truth about the fragrance

You will see this species listed as fragrant, and we would rather tell you exactly how strong that claim is. Two North American orchid nurseries state it plainly on their product pages. Against that, every botanical and major horticultural source we checked — Flora of North America, Go Orchids, Plant Delights, Hillside, Mt. Cuba, Missouri Botanical Garden, the RHS, Kew — says nothing about scent at all, and we could not find a single published description of what the scent is actually like. No vanilla, no citrus, no rose; just the word "fragrant."

Our honest reading: a light sweet scent, noticeable if you put your face close to the flower on a warm sunny day, and reported inconsistently enough that it may well vary from clone to clone. Buy it for the flower, which is genuinely extraordinary. If it happens to smell sweet in your garden, treat that as a bonus.

Why it is worth the trouble

The pouch is the size of a hen's egg — 53 to 65 millimetres, the largest of any lady's slipper in North America, hung with long chocolate-brown petals that spiral outward like ribbons. A mature clump carries several of them at once, at around knee height, in a shaded corner of the garden in late spring. There is nothing else hardy that looks remotely like it.

And it is more forgiving than its reputation suggests. It does not need an alpine house, a chiller, or a cool summer climate. It needs shade, a mineral mix that drains, water that never quite stops, a restrained hand with fertilizer, and a winter it is allowed to actually experience. Get those five right and this is a plant that comes back bigger every year — which matters, because in the wild it is vulnerable and declining, and every plant raised properly from nursery stock is one fewer reason for anyone to dig a wild one.

1981 年,Clyde F. Reed 在《Phytologia》上正式發表了 Cypripedium kentuckiense,也就是今日 Kew 採認的學名。最後的疑問在 1998 年被清除:Case 等人以同工酶比對確認,它確實是獨立種,而不是大黃花杓蘭一個特別巨大的型。坊間偶爾把這段歷史講成一樁造假事件,但在可查證的紀錄裡找不到任何依據。那是一場命名優先權之爭,而 Daulton 從頭到尾是對的。

更有意思的問題是:一株近一米高、開著全北美最大花朵的蘭花,怎麼會拖到 1981 年才被命名?答案是它藏在植物學家很少走進去的地方——林坡底部泥濘的滲水地,以及氾濫平原林中的砂質溝谷。它在暮春只開幾週,族群零星分散;而過去一百年裡,看見它的人心裡都默默歸檔為「特別大的 pubescens」,然後走開了。

海拔零米,對一株杓蘭意味著什麼

有一個數字會重組您對這株植物的所有理解:0–400 米。這是《北美植物誌》給出的海拔範圍,也是目前唯一有數值的權威來源。對照大多數蘭友最先接觸的亞洲杓蘭——西藏杓蘭、大花杓蘭、台灣喜普鞋蘭——它們生活在 1,500 到 3,500 米之間,靠海拔換取涼爽。這一種沒有海拔可以躲。維吉尼亞的那個族群,基本上就長在海平面上。

那麼它是怎麼熬過阿肯色的夏天的?靠極為講究的微棲地選擇。每一份調查反覆出現的都是那兩類地形:成熟氾濫平原林中的沖積階地,以及山坡底部岩層裂隙湧水形成的泉源滲水地。兩者都在鬱閉的闊葉林冠之下,兩者都有水終年流經根區。美國國家植被分類甚至為它設了專門的群叢:紅楓、藍果樹、楓香與山毛櫸之下是皇冠蕨,而且「通常有泥炭苔」。Mena 測站七月氣溫也許讀到 32°C,但在那樣的林冠底下、那樣的滲水坡上,根部所處的環境舒服得多。

這一個觀察,其實就是整份養護指南的縮影。給它遮蔭,給它一個永不乾透也永不滯悶的根區,紙面上那個嚇人的氣溫就不再是問題。

熱它扛得住,冷它非要不可

在常見的栽培杓蘭裡,耐熱程度大致排序為:formosanumkentuckienseparviflorum var. pubescensparviflorum var. parviflorumcalceolusreginae。北卡羅來納的 Plant Delights 稱它是美國東南部最好種的杓蘭之一;Hillside Nursery 則說它是屬內最能忍受夏季高土溫的一種。上限是有的,而且被量過:路易斯安那的繁殖試驗記錄到溫室高溫達 45°C,直接造成幼苗死亡或被迫提前休眠;同一批植株移到戶外半遮蔭後便恢復了。

另一半的方程式,才是大家真正弄錯的地方。「南方物種」不等於「不需要冬天」。它仍然需要兩到三個月低於約 5°C 才會萌動花芽;得不到這段低溫的植株,會年復一年埋在土裡什麼也不做,直到根莖耗盡。把休眠中的杓蘭「為了保護它」搬進室內,是最可靠的殺死方式。栽培者的回報是 8–12 週、4–5°C 為實務下限——確實比 C. reginae 要求得少,但絕不是零。

已發表的耐寒區數字分歧得出人意料:Plant Delights 給 3a–8b;密蘇里植物園給 3–7,並註明 8 區只有在額外遮蔭下才可行;英國 RHS 只給 H5(約 −15°C);歐洲苗商則宣稱可耐 −30°C。橫著讀完這些,實務上的訊息很清楚:限制這株植物的不是冷。大約 −25°C 以下需要穩定的積雪覆蓋或厚覆蓋物,注意事項就這麼多。

遮蔭,以及要遮多少

所有來源對答案的形狀都有共識,卻幾乎沒有人給出數字。Travaldo 提供了唯一可用的一個:70% 遮光網即可。Frosch 說半遮蔭、正午不見直射,或者建築物北側。密蘇里植物園允許上午或傍晚 1–2 小時斜射陽光,但僅限夏季涼爽的地區。White Flower Farm 講得最直白——越往南,就要越多遮蔭

本種從未有人發表過實測 lux 值。由遮光率換算大約落在 12,000–20,000 lux,但那是估計而非測量,請當成起點而不是規格。實務上的判斷比算術容易:如果盛夏葉緣焦枯,就是光太強;如果植株抽得又高又軟、就是不開花,那就是光不夠。

植料,以及那份不該加的石灰

礦物比例過半來配。浮石或珍珠岩負責結構,粗砂或火山石負責排水,少量細樹皮或椰纖作為有機成分,底下鋪數公分厚的粗顆粒排水層。Frosch 對露地栽培的指示是把表土 10 公分用碎火山石或黏土顆粒鬆開;Phytesia 則直接規定礦物至少五成。堆肥與肥沃園土出局——兩者都太保水,鹽分也太高。

接著是 pH 的問題,值得單獨一段,因為弄錯的代價很高。老經驗說「杓蘭要加石灰」,而對 C. reginaeC. calceolusC. candidum 來說完全正確——每年補一次牡蠣殼粉是標準作法。但那不是這一種。美國林務署、NatureServe 與 Go Orchids 都描述它出自酸性砂質滲水地,而野外與它比鄰而生的泥炭苔,大概是自然界最明確的 pH 指示物了。與此相對,維吉尼亞的族群長在鹽基較豐的滲水濕地邊緣,路易斯安那的官方摺頁寫「酸性到石灰質皆有」,德國苗商則建議含石灰的介質。Plant Delights 落在 6.0–6.5;White Flower Farm 說 6.5–7.0,並明講「不偏酸」。

權衡各方證據,我們採 pH 6.0–6.5:微酸至近中性,不加石灰,也不刻意酸化。若您的自來水偏硬,摻一份鹿沼土可以把介質溫和地拉回來。但不必為此失眠——決定這株植物生死的是排水與遮蔭,pH 的份量遠遠不及。

水:要滲水坡,不要沼澤

這是 kentuckiense 唯一會要求「多數杓蘭指南都在警告的事」的地方。它長在終年滲水的坡地上。密蘇里植物園形容它在濕潤的沼澤地帶生長良好;德國栽培者的回報是它要「非常濕潤、永不乾燥」。整個生長季讓介質保持均勻濕潤,第一年尤其不要讓它有任何一次乾透。

真正決定生死的分別,在於流動的水停滯的水。滲水坡是飽和的,同時也是充氧的,因為水持續在通過。一個排水孔堵住的花盆同樣是飽和的,卻是缺氧的——這個組合幾週內就能爛掉一條根莖。這正是礦物比例與排水層不可妥協的原因:它們讓「持續濕潤」變成安全的,而不是致命的。休眠期減到僅維持微潤;在冬季多雨的地區——尤其卑詩省沿海——在休眠的芽點上加一個通風的擋雨罩,比再細心的澆水都有用。

施肥:克制本身就是技術

各來源在細節上分歧,在方向上一致。Special Vegetation 建議每兩加侖 1/4 茶匙的 Dyna-Gro、隔次澆水施用、只在 5 至 8 月,並附上一句很受用的總結:「少即是多」。White Flower Farm 建議均衡肥 1/4 劑量。Travaldo 說半劑量、每十天一次。Plant Delights 乾脆拒用任何鹽基速效肥,改用有機配方。Frosch 是唯一的異議者,主張用緩釋顆粒肥、劑量比照其他宿根花卉,而且「不要更少」。

有一個數據點可以穿透這些分歧:在路易斯安那的移植試驗中,種植當下施肥被明確記錄為有害。所以請種進未施肥的介質,等新芽長起來、確實在生長之後,再開始輕輕地施。8 月後停肥,讓根莖與明年的花芽成熟。若您猶豫要不要再施一次,對這個屬而言,正確答案是不要。

怎麼讓它開花

秋季到貨即種,讓根莖在新位置上完整地過一個冬。根要水平攤開在表土 10 公分之內——像種球根那樣把根垂直插下去,是苗商點名次數最多的錯誤。根莖埋在表土下 2–3 公分,休眠芽朝上,芽尖大約在土面下一公分處。

然後就是等。開花株規格的根莖,理論上隔年春天就會開,但移植緊迫常讓植株跳過一季,這不是失敗的徵兆。從種子開始則要 5–10 年。一旦定植成功,株叢會緩慢增大、逐年開得更慷慨;分株在休眠期進行,秋季或早春皆可,分完立刻種回去。

如果一株已定植、長得也不錯的植株就是不開花,請按這個順序檢查:它今年真的過了冬嗎,有沒有連續兩到三個月低於 5°C?是不是遮得太暗了?有沒有施肥過頭,把養分都長成了葉子而不是花芽?這三項可以解釋大多數案例。鹿、蛞蝓與偶爾一隻毛毛蟲解釋掉其餘的——一隻毛毛蟲一個晚上就能吃掉一整季的花苞。

關於香味的實話

您會看到這個物種被標示為有香,而我們寧可把這個說法的強度講清楚。兩家北美蘭苗商在商品頁上明白寫了「fragrant」。與此相對,我們查過的每一份植物學與主要園藝來源——《北美植物誌》、Go Orchids、Plant Delights、Hillside、Mt. Cuba、密蘇里植物園、RHS、Kew——完全沒有提到氣味,而且我們找不到任何一份對這股香氣「究竟像什麼」的已發表描述。沒有香草,沒有柑橘,沒有玫瑰;只有「fragrant」這個詞。

我們誠實的判讀是:溫暖晴日把臉湊近時可察覺的淡淡甜香,而且各方回報不一致,很可能因株而異。請為了那朵花買它——那朵花是真的了不起。如果它在您的院子裡剛好也是香的,就當作額外的紅利。

為什麼值得費這番工夫

唇囊有雞蛋那麼大——53 到 65 毫米,全北美杓蘭之最,兩側垂著長長的巧克力色花瓣,像緞帶一樣向外旋開。成熟株叢會同時舉起好幾朵,高度大約及膝,在暮春的庭園陰角裡。耐寒植物中,沒有第二種長得像它。

而且它比名聲所暗示的寬容得多。它不需要高山溫室,不需要製冷機,也不需要涼爽的夏季氣候。它需要的是遮蔭、一份會排水的礦物介質、一股永不完全停止的水、一隻克制的施肥的手,以及一個真正被允許發生的冬天。把這五件事做對,它會一年比一年大——這件事有其份量,因為它在野外是易危而且持續衰退的,每一株好好養大的苗場苗,都少給任何人一個去挖野生株的理由。

Deciduous terrestrial with a creeping underground rhizome; the whole above-ground plant is rebuilt annually. No pseudobulbs. Mature plants form multi-stemmed clumps
🌳 Habitat
Two habitats recur: mature hardwood floodplains and alluvial terraces, and springhead seeps at the base of slopes. Soils stay moist year-round yet drain; Sphagnum, royal fern and red maple are frequent associates. The US National Vegetation Classification even carries a named association for it, CEGL007444
⛰️ Elevation
0–400 m (Flora of North America — the only authority that publishes a figure; NatureServe, POWO and Weakley give none). This is the number to remember. Asian Cypripedium mostly sit at 1,500–3,500 m; this one is a genuine lowland plant, and the Virginia population is close to sea level
📏 Size
Large. Stems 35–97 cm, 3–6 leaves (13–24 × 4.3–15 cm), 1–2 flowers per stem. The pouch is (41–)53–65 mm — the largest of any North American Cypripedium; C. parviflorum var. pubescens manages only 20–54 mm. Twisted petals reach 8.4–15.6 cm, giving a flower up to 12 cm across
🎨 Colour
The pouch is ivory to very pale cream-yellow — the quickest way to separate it from the egg-yolk yellow of var. pubescens. Sepals and petals are greenish-yellow, so heavily netted with dark red-brown that they read almost chocolate. Staminode broadly ovoid, pale yellow with red marks
🌸 Blooming
April to June in the wild (Flora of North America); mid-May into June in most North American gardens. Where it grows alongside the Large Yellow Lady's Slipper it flowers later. Individual flowers last 1.5–3 weeks depending on weather

Faint and variable. Two North American orchid nurseries list it as fragrant, but every botanical source checked is silent on scent — Flora of North America, Go Orchids, Plant Delights, Kew, Missouri Botanical Garden — and no citable description of the scent's character exists. An Oklahoma resurvey in 2001–02 relocated only 3 of 12 historical sites, totalling fewer than 20 stems

This is one of the most heat-tolerant species in the genus. Summer highs of 31–32°C are normal in its home range and it grows straight through them — provided it has shade and a cool root zone. A Louisiana glasshouse trial recorded 45°C causing death or forced dormancy. Winter needs 2–3 months below 5°C to break bud. Hardiness ratings differ sharply: Plant Delights 3a–8b, Missouri Botanical Garden 3–7 (zone 8 only with extra shade), RHS only H5 (about −15°C), while European nurseries claim −30°C

The species grows at 0–400 m, so the station sits inside its own elevation band and no lapse-rate correction is applied. Cross-reference only — grow to your own conditions. Summer humidity in habitat runs 70–85%. In the ground, judging by soil moisture is enough; what matters is air movement — heat plus stagnant damp is what rots the resting bud

More than half mineral: pumice or perlite, plus coarse grit or lava rock, plus a modest fraction of fine bark or coir, over a coarse drainage layer. pH 6.0–6.5, slightly acid to near neutral. Do not lime it the way you would reginae or calceolus — that recipe belongs to different species (see Did You Know, third item). No compost, no rich garden loam
🚿 Watering
In the wild it sits on slopes that seep all year, so it tolerates steady moisture better than most Cypripedium: keep the medium evenly moist in growth and never let it dry out. No cultivation source endorses standing water, however — the drainage layer and the mineral fraction are what make constant moisture safe. Barely moist through dormancy; European growers add a rain cover against winter wet
🌿 Feeding
Less is more. A light dose of slow-release granules after emergence, or a balanced feed at quarter strength every 10–14 days, stopping in August. Avoid high-salt soluble feeds. The Louisiana out-planting trial found that fertilizer applied at planting time was actively detrimental. (Frosch is the lone dissenter, recommending the same rate as any other perennial)
🌱 Planting
Plant on arrival in autumn (mid-October). Spread the roots horizontally within the top 10 cm, rhizome 2–3 cm deep, resting bud pointing up — planting roots vertically is the failure nurseries name most often. Bud tip about 0.6–1.3 cm below the surface. Seed to flowering takes 5–10 years; repot established pots every 4–5 years
😴 Dormancy
A true deciduous rest. The top growth yellows and collapses in autumn and the plant overwinters as a bare rhizome — looking dead is normal; do not dig it up to check. Mulch with 5–15 cm of chopped leaves once dormant, removing it gradually in spring, mainly to stop freeze–thaw heaving. "It's a southern species, so it doesn't need cold" is the expensive misreading: without 2–3 months under 5°C it simply will not break bud
🔍 Did You Know
  • An orchid found on a fishing trip that took thirty years to name. In April 1951 Jim Daulton, an amateur botanist from Scioto County, Ohio, came across unfamiliar lady's slippers while fishing in Kentucky. He collected two, grew them for decades, and kept pressing professional botanists to come and look. In 1977 Victor Soukup of the University of Cincinnati finally visited and published the plant as Cypripedium daultonii in his honour — but the name failed on a technicality (one account says a missing Latin description; Kew annotates it as an illegitimate later homonym). Clyde F. Reed republished it as C. kentuckiense in Phytologia in 1981, and that is the name in use today. Isozyme work by Case and colleagues in 1998 settled the question for good: it is a distinct species, not an oversized Large Yellow. The "hoax" version of this story that circulates in hobby literature is not supported by any traceable source — the dispute was about nomenclatural priority, not fraud.
  • It is the parent that brought big flowers and heat tolerance into garden Cypripedium. The largest pouch in North America attached to a constitution that shrugs off southern summers made it a breeder's prize. Verified registered grexes include Cyp. Rascalparviflorum, Whitlow 1990), Cyp. Philipp (macranthos ×, Frosch 1996), Cyp. Lucy Pinkepanktibeticum, Pinkepank 1998), Cyp. Gabriela (fasciolatum ×, Frosch 2003) and Cyp. Julie Anncalcicolum, Keisling 2004). Worth correcting, because the names are easy to confuse: Cyp. Hank Small (parviflorum × henryi), Cyp. Michael (macranthos × henryi) and Cyp. Gisela (parviflorum × macranthos) have nothing to do with this species.
  • "Lady's slippers want lime" is the right prescription for the wrong plant. C. reginae, C. calceolus and C. candidum genuinely want neutral to alkaline soil and an annual dressing of crushed oyster shell. This one does not. The literature on its pH is openly contradictory: the US Forest Service, NatureServe and Go Orchids all describe acid sandy seeps (the Sphagnum that grows alongside it in the wild supports this), yet the Virginia population sits on base-rich seepage margins, Louisiana's official fact sheet says "acidic to calcareous," and German nurseries recommend a lime-bearing mix outright. Weighing it up, we use pH 6.0–6.5no need to lime it, no need to acidify it; drainage and shade matter far more than pH does.
