  • 被降級又被平反的一百年:1916 年早田文藏於合歡山約 2,500 米處採得並發表為獨立種,種小名取自台灣舊稱 Formosa。1975 年應紹舜將它降為日本喜普鞋蘭的變種(C. japonicum var. formosanum),1978 年更一度被完全併入日本種;直到 Cribb 於 1997 年的《The Genus Cypripedium》專著中才恢復其獨立種地位。今日 Kew POWO 採認的正是 Hayata 的原始學名

The Slipper That Needs WinterCypripedium formosanum — Full Care Guide

Most slipper orchids die in cultivation because they get too cold. This one dies because it gets too warm — and because somebody kindly brought it indoors for the winter.

In 1916 the Japanese botanist Bunzō Hayata was working through the flora of what was then called Formosa. At roughly 2,500 metres on Hehuanshan, in the northern half of Taiwan's Central Mountain Range, he collected a small slipper orchid with two opposite, fan-pleated leaves and a single white flower speckled crimson inside the pouch. It looked very like the Japanese Cypripedium japonicum, but not quite. He published it as a species of its own and named it after the island: formosanum.

Taxonomy then spent eighty years disagreeing with him. In 1975 it was demoted to a variety of the Japanese species. By 1978 some authors had folded it in entirely. Only in 1997, in Phillip Cribb's monograph The Genus Cypripedium, was it restored to full species rank — which is where Kew's Plants of the World Online still has it today. If you ever see it sold as C. japonicum var. formosanum, that is a fifty-year-old name, not a different plant.

What 2,400 metres actually feels like

This is the number that explains everything else. Taiwan sits at the latitude of Havana, but the plant lives between 2,000 and 3,000 metres, and altitude undoes latitude. The Alishan weather station sits at 2,413 m — squarely inside the species' band — and its annual mean is 11.4°C. The warmest month, July, averages 14.7°C. January averages 6.5°C, with frost and occasional snow.

Read that again: the hottest month in its home is cooler than a mild English June. A subtropical island produced an orchid that has never experienced a warm summer. It grows on the floor of hemlock and spruce forest, in deep leaf litter over well-drained slopes, under cloud that arrives most afternoons and keeps the light soft and the air wet.

One footnote on the elevation figures, because the sources genuinely disagree. OrchidSpecies gives 1,500–2,000 m; Travaldo gives 2,000–3,000 m; Plant Delights says 7,000–9,000 feet. The type was collected around 2,500 m. Treat 2,000–3,000 m as the honest range and 2,200–2,600 m as the core, and be aware that any culture advice derived from the lower figure will run several degrees too warm.

The heat is what kills it

Aim for 15–18°C by day and 8–11°C at night through the growing season. It will tolerate more. What it will not tolerate is sustained heat: above about 28–30°C the roots begin to rot, and by the time the leaves tell you, the rhizome is usually already lost.

Practically, that means the summer position matters more than the winter one. North side of a building, under deciduous trees, on a slope that never bakes. In a container, a pot that sits in afternoon sun will cook the root zone even when the air is fine — terracotta, shade on the pot itself, or plunging the pot into the ground all help. This species is rated hardy to zones 6b–9b, but hardiness is about winter, and winter is not the problem.

Light: bright, but never at midday

12,000–18,000 lux — bright shade rather than deep shade. In habitat it takes a few hours of slanting sun through forest gaps and then spends the afternoon under cloud. Reproduce that shape: morning light, midday shade. Under 50–60% shade cloth, or in the shadow a building casts after noon, it colours up well and the leaves stay firm. In genuine deep shade it survives but stops flowering.

Media: drainage above everything else

Forget orchid bark mixes designed for epiphytes, and forget rich garden soil equally. What this plant wants is an open, gritty, humus-bearing mineral mix that drains fast and still holds moisture — pumice or perlite, crushed lava, leafmould or fine bark, and coarse sand. Put a layer of coarse lava at the bottom of the pot as drainage, and finish the surface with one to two centimetres of pure pumice so the emerging bud is never sitting in wet organic matter. That top layer prevents more losses than any other single detail.

Plant the rhizome shallow: 2–3 cm below the surface, buds pointing up, roots spread horizontally, not coiled downwards into a hole. Deep planting is a common and quietly fatal error.

On pH the sources contradict each other, and it is worth saying so plainly. Most descriptions emphasise acidic, humus-rich conifer forest floor. But there are stable populations in the limestone hills of eastern Taiwan, and Plant Delights describes the habitat soils as alkaline outright. The workable answer is that anything from pH 5.5 to 7.0 grows it well, and that drainage and summer coolness matter far more than pH. Do not add lime, and do not chase acidity either.

Water: evenly moist, never waterlogged, never bone dry

From March to November, water generously and let the mix stay evenly damp. It has no pseudobulbs and no water storage at all beyond the rhizome, so a full dry-out during growth costs you the season. Equally, standing water at the crown is fatal within days. In hot weather water early in the morning, which also cools the root zone; avoid evening watering that leaves the crown wet overnight in warm air.

During dormancy keep the medium barely moist. Not dry, not wet. A rhizome left completely dry all winter will shrivel; one left soaking will rot.

Feeding: less than you think

Frosch, the German nursery that has done more for hardy Cypripedium in cultivation than anyone, recommends a granulated slow-release garden fertiliser applied in spring, at the rate you would use for any perennial — and explicitly discourages compost and orchid fertilisers. If you prefer liquid feed, use an orchid fertiliser at quarter strength every two weeks and no more. Stop feeding after August so the rhizome ripens before dormancy. Salt build-up in a small pot is a real risk with this genus; flush with plain water monthly.

Vernalisation: the 0–5°C rule

This is the section that decides whether you keep the plant. In October and November the leaves yellow, collapse and die back completely. The plant looks dead. It is not. Everything is in the rhizome, and what it needs next is cold: two to three months between 0 and 5°C. Without that chilling period the buds do not break properly in spring, or break weakly and never flower; repeat the mistake for two or three years and the rhizome exhausts itself and dies.

So: leave it outside. In zones 6b–9b it overwinters in the ground with nothing more than a mulch. In a pot, sink the pot in the garden, or move it to an unheated shed, cold frame or garage where it stays cold but not desiccated. The single most expensive mistake with this species is bringing it into a warm greenhouse or living room "to protect it". Late spring frosts, once the shoot is up, are the one thing worth covering against — an upturned bucket or fleece over the emerging growth.

The truth about fragrance

There isn't any. No literature source and no grower report describes a meaningful scent, and our product listing says the same. Cypripedium pouches are deception traps: an insect drops in, finds no reward at all, and leaves past the anthers. This one advertises visually and delivers nothing — no nectar, no perfume. Buy it for the flower, not the smell.

Why it is worth growing anyway

Because when it works, a clump of formosanum in April is one of the most beautiful things in a temperate garden — two pleated green fans like a folded paper hand-fan, and above them a white slipper freckled with crimson. Because it is one of the more forgiving Cypripedium in cultivation once the summer position is right; Plant Delights calls it maintenance-free in the garden once established. And because it is endangered in the wild, hit hard by decades of illegal collecting, so every seed-raised plant grown well in a garden is a small argument against digging one off a mountain.

Get three things right and the rest is easy: cool in summer, cold in winter, and water that leaves as fast as it arrives.

大部分的拖鞋蘭死於太冷。這一種死於太熱——以及某個人好心地在入冬時把它搬進了室內。

1916 年,合歡山的一張採集籤

1916 年,日本植物學家早田文藏正在整理當時稱為「福爾摩沙」的植物相。在中央山脈北段合歡山約 2,500 米處,他採到一株小型的拖鞋蘭:兩枚對生的扇形摺葉,單朵白花,唇瓣內側灑滿深紅斑點。它很像日本的 Cypripedium japonicum,卻又不完全是。他將它發表為獨立種,並以這座島的舊名為它命名——formosanum

請再讀一次這句話:它老家最熱的那個月,比英國一個溫和的六月還要涼。一座亞熱帶島嶼,孕育出一種從未經歷過炎夏的蘭花。它生長在鐵杉與雲杉林的林床上,厚厚的腐植層底下是排水良好的坡地,午後多半起雲霧,光線因此柔和,空氣始終潮濕。

關於海拔數字有一點必須誠實交代,因為各家資料確實分歧:OrchidSpecies 記 1,500–2,000 米,Travaldo 記 2,000–3,000 米,Plant Delights 記 7,000–9,000 英尺,模式標本則採自約 2,500 米。合理的處理是把 2,000–3,000 米視為全幅範圍、2,200–2,600 米視為核心帶;並且要意識到,任何以較低海拔推算出來的養護建議,溫度都會偏高好幾度。

殺死它的是高溫,不是低溫

生長季請以日溫 15–18°C、夜溫 8–11°C 為目標。稍微超出它都能忍受,但它無法忍受持續的高溫:一旦超過約 28–30°C,根系就開始腐爛,而等到葉片顯示異常時,根莖通常已經救不回來了。

因此,夏季的擺放位置比冬季重要得多。建築物北側、落葉喬木底下、或永遠曬不到西曬的坡面。盆植時尤其要注意:午後陽光直射盆壁,即使氣溫正常也會把根區烤熟——改用素燒盆、替盆身本身遮蔭、或乾脆把盆埋進土裡,都有幫助。本種標示耐寒區 6b–9b,但「耐寒」講的是冬天,而冬天從來不是問題。

光照:要亮,但絕不能是正午的直射

12,000–18,000 lux,屬於明亮的散射光而非深蔭。原生地的它會在林隙中接受幾小時斜射陽光,接著整個下午都在雲霧之下。請複製這個「形狀」:上午給光,正午遮蔭。放在 50–60% 遮光網下,或放在建築物午後投下的陰影裡,葉片會挺實、開花也好。全然的深蔭下它能活,但不會開花。

植料:排水的優先順序高於一切

請忘掉為附生蘭設計的樹皮配方,也同樣忘掉肥沃的園土。它要的是一份疏鬆、帶顆粒感、含少量腐植質的礦質介質:浮石或珍珠岩、碎火山石、腐葉土(或細樹皮)、加上粗砂。盆底鋪一層粗火山石當排水層,表面再覆蓋 1–2 公分的純浮石,讓即將萌發的芽點永遠不會泡在潮濕的有機質裡。光是這一層表土,救回來的植株就比任何其他細節都多。

種植深度要淺:根莖埋在表土下 2–3 公分,芽點朝上,根系水平攤開,而不是塞進一個洞裡向下捲曲。種太深是一個常見、而且會安靜地致命的錯誤。

關於 pH,各家資料互相矛盾,這一點值得挑明。多數描述強調腐植質豐富的酸性針葉林床;但台灣東部的石灰岩山區同樣有穩定族群,而 Plant Delights 甚至直接把棲地土壤寫成「鹼性」。可操作的結論是:pH 5.5 到 7.0 之間都能種得很好,排水與夏季涼爽的重要性遠超過 pH。不必加石灰,也不必刻意酸化。

澆水:均勻濕潤,不積水,也不全乾

三月到十一月的生長期請充分給水,讓介質維持均勻的濕潤。它沒有假球莖,除了根莖之外毫無儲水構造,生長期一次徹底乾透就會賠掉整個季節。反過來說,芽心積水幾天之內就是致命的。天熱時請在清晨澆水,順便為根區降溫;避免傍晚澆水讓芽心在溫暖的夜裡整晚潮濕。

休眠期只需維持「微潤」——不乾、也不濕。整個冬天完全乾放的根莖會皺縮;泡在水裡的則會腐爛。

施肥:比您以為的要少

德國苗圃 Frosch 在耐寒杓蘭的栽培上貢獻無人能及,他們的建議是:春季施用一次顆粒型緩釋園藝肥,劑量比照一般宿根草花即可,並且明確不建議使用堆肥與蘭花專用肥。若您偏好液肥,請用蘭花肥的四分之一劑量、每兩週一次,不要再多。八月之後停肥,讓根莖在休眠前充分成熟。小盆積鹽對本屬是實際存在的風險,請每月以清水沖洗一次介質。

春化:0–5°C 的那條鐵則

這一節決定您留不留得住這株植物。十月到十一月,葉片轉黃、倒伏、完全枯萎。它看起來就是死了。但它沒有。所有的生命都收進了地下根莖,而它接下來需要的是冷:兩到三個月、0 到 5°C 的低溫。少了這段春化,春天的芽點不會正常打開,或者勉強萌發卻永遠不開花;連續兩三年如此,根莖耗盡,植株就此結束。

所以:請把它留在戶外。在 6b–9b 區,地植只需一層覆蓋物就能安然過冬。盆植的話,把盆埋進花園土裡,或移到不加溫的棚屋、冷床、車庫——保持低溫但不至於完全風乾。本種最昂貴的一個錯誤,就是為了「保護它」而把它搬進溫暖的溫室或客廳。真正需要防護的是晚春霜:等新芽冒出之後,遇到晚霜請用倒扣的水桶或不織布蓋住新芽。

關於香味的實話

沒有香味。文獻與栽培者回報都沒有描述過任何明顯氣味,我們的商品頁標示也是如此。杓蘭屬的囊袋本質上是一個欺騙式陷阱:昆蟲掉進去,發現裡面什麼獎賞都沒有,只能從花藥旁邊擠出去。這一種靠視覺招搖,卻什麼也不給——沒有花蜜,也沒有香氣。請為了那朵花而買它,不要為了氣味。

那為什麼還值得種

因為當一切對了,四月裡一叢盛開的 formosanum 是溫帶庭園裡最美的景象之一:兩把摺得整整齊齊的綠色扇子,扇面之上懸著一隻灑了胭脂斑點的白色拖鞋。因為只要夏季位置擺對,它其實是杓蘭屬中相對寬容的一種——Plant Delights 甚至說它一旦定植就幾乎免照顧。也因為它在野外已經是瀕危物種,數十年的盜採重創了族群;每一株人工播種、在庭園裡被種好的個體,都是對「從山上挖一株回家」這件事最溫和也最有力的反駁。

只要做對三件事,其餘都不難:夏天涼、冬天冷、水來得快也去得快。

Endemic to Taiwan. Concentrated in the northern half of the Central Mountain Range (Hehuanshan, Nanhudashan, Zhongyangjianshan), extending north to Taipingshan in Yilan and south to the Alishan massif; stable populations also occur on the limestone hills of eastern Taiwan (Hualien)

Deciduous terrestrial with a stout creeping underground rhizome. Top growth is renewed annually; no pseudobulbs

Leaf-litter layer of hemlock, spruce and mixed conifer–broadleaf forest; also cool damp alpine grassland, scree and the margins of dwarf bamboo. Half-shaded, sharply drained slopes that never dry out completely

2,000–3,000 m (core populations 2,200–2,600 m). Sources disagree widely: OrchidSpecies gives 1,500–2,000 m, Plant Delights gives 7,000–9,000 ft (c. 2,130–2,740 m), and the type was collected at about 2,500 m

Small to medium; erect stem 15–25 cm carrying two opposite, fan-shaped plicate leaves with 11–13 radiating veins and finely fringed margins. One flower per stem, 6–7 cm across, white to blush pink with deep pink to crimson spotting on the pouch

Early April to mid-May in habitat; April–May in temperate gardens, timing set by when vernalisation breaks

None recorded. Neither the literature nor grower reports describe a scent — the flower is a visual deception trap offering no nectar and no perfume

Listed Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Threats are decades of illegal collecting, road and tourism development, and warming-driven late frosts and summer heat. Plants in trade should be seed-raised nursery stock; never buy wild-collected material

Cross-reference only — adjust to your own conditions. Note that Travaldo's summer figures of 22–24 / 16–18°C run well above what is actually measured at this elevation, suggesting a lower reference altitude was used.
💦 Humidity
60–80%. Outdoors, evenly damp soil is the practical measure; in a dry indoor space, sustained humidity below 40% scorches the leaf tips. Good air movement is essential
🍂 Media
Drainage comes first. Pumice or perlite + crushed lava + leafmould or fine bark + coarse grit, over a coarse lava drainage layer, topped with 1–2 cm of pure pumice so the emerging bud never sits wet. pH 5.5–7.0 all works (see Did You Know, below). No compost and no rich garden soil. Plant the rhizome only 2–3 cm deep, buds up, roots spread horizontally
🚿 Watering
Generous from March to November, keeping the mix evenly moist — never waterlogged and never bone dry. Reduce to barely moist through dormancy. In hot spells water early in the morning, which also cools the root zone; avoid evening watering that leaves the crown wet overnight
🌿 Feeding
A granulated slow-release garden fertiliser in spring at normal perennial rates (Frosch's recommendation), or orchid fertiliser at quarter strength every two weeks. Stop feeding after August. Avoid compost and high-salt soluble feeds; flush the pot with plain water monthly
😴 Dormancy
True deciduous dormancy. Top growth yellows and collapses in October–November and the plant overwinters as a bare rhizome — it looks dead, and that is normal; do not dig it up or discard it. It then requires two to three months between 0 and 5°C to break bud and flower properly. Overwintering in a heated greenhouse or indoors is the most common and most expensive mistake with this species. Protect emerging spring growth from late frosts with a bucket or fleece
🔍 Did You Know
  • A hundred years of being demoted and reinstated. Hayata collected it at about 2,500 m on Hehuanshan and published it as a species in 1916, naming it after Formosa. In 1975 it was reduced to C. japonicum var. formosanum, and by 1978 some authors had sunk it into the Japanese species altogether. Cribb's 1997 monograph The Genus Cypripedium restored it, and Kew's POWO accepts Hayata's original name today.
  • It is a slipper orchid, but everything about its culture is inverted. Paphiopedilum is evergreen, frost-tender and intermediate-growing. Cypripedium is deciduous, frost-hardy and heat-intolerant. Treat this one like a Paph — warm greenhouse, no winter chill — and it will fail to break dormancy year after year until the rhizome exhausts itself.
  • Acid or alkaline? The sources genuinely disagree. Most accounts stress acidic, humus-rich conifer forest floor, yet there are stable populations on the limestone hills of eastern Taiwan, and Plant Delights describes the habitat soils as alkaline outright. The practical conclusion: anything from pH 5.5 to 7.0 grows it well, and drainage and summer coolness matter far more than pH. Do not add lime, and do not chase acidity.
